Limber Health has announced compelling new findings from its partnership with Athletico Physical Therapy, a leader in rehabilitation services with 900+ clinics nationwide. In a dataset of over 4,000 Athletico patients who received hybrid musculoskeletal (MSK) care with Limber Health’s Remote Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM) solution, the analysis demonstrates significant improvements in patient outcomes compared to the historical standard of care without RTM.
Hybrid MSK care and RTM combine in-person physical or occupational therapy with digital tools and virtual support to extend the reach of rehabilitation beyond the clinic walls. This model directly addresses critical therapy adherence challenges, a longstanding industry-wide issue in MSK care, where fewer than 35% of patients1 follow home exercise programs prescribed during their rehabilitation episode of care.
Athletico and Limber successfully implemented RTM and a hybrid model of care across Athletico’s national network of more than 900 clinics. The analysis compared outcomes for patients engaged in RTM (n=4,081) with a matched cohort of patients with similar demographics who received traditional physical therapy without RTM (n=28,916), revealing statistically significant improvements (P < 0.001) in the RTM cohort.
Patients utilizing RTM at Athletico demonstrated higher adherence to their plan of care and achieved significantly better outcomes in pain reduction and functional improvement compared to those in the non-RTM cohort.
The case study’s findings carry significant implications for healthcare providers, payors, and policymakers. RTM, reimbursable through Medicare and a growing set of private payors, offers a solution to address patient adherence gaps and improve outcomes with MSK care. This hybrid model represents an opportunity to advance value-based care initiatives, reduce costs, and optimize recovery outcomes for patients with musculoskeletal conditions.
